What a fabulous start to April! Sunshine, warmth, lots of flowers and blossom around, and a great time of year to get active! We took part in the Active for Life event recently. Run by Brighton & Hove Council, it is aimed at over 50’s and provides taster sessions for lots of different sporty activities. It was great fun and we were very inspired by the number of older people getting involved in new activities. If you weren’t able to attend but want to know more about what’s available do contact the Healthy Lifestyles Team on 01273 294589. If you would prefer to start by having a one-to-one consultation about what might suit you best do book a session with one of the Brighton & Hove Council Health Trainers. For more information or to book a consultation call 01273 296877.

Physiotherapy

If you are struggling with your movement? You might benefit from some physiotherapy at home? We have a fabulous physio, Anna, on our team. Anna can see you at home when suits you and work through a programme of exercises to help you regain strength and mobility. Physio can also help with pain, in addition to improvement with confidence, balance and preventing falls. Anna worked for many years in the NHS before starting her private practice. If you would like to know more do give us a ring.

Yoga

Yoga is a great way to keep yourself mobile and maintain strength. We have a fabulous yoga practitioner, Tiffany, on the Home & Company team. Tiffany can come to your home for one to one yoga sessions that are tailored to your ability.

Occupational therapy

Sometimes we just need a few adjustments to make movement easier. Alex is an Occupational Therapist on our team who might be able to help. Alex can visit you in your home and look at what you are struggling with. She will then be able to recommend equipment, adaptations or sometimes just simple, practical strategies to help you do things more easily and safely. Alex also has many years of NHS experience in addition to her private practice. If you would like to know more about how Alex could help you just call us on 01273 434190.

Staying hydrated

Now that the weather is warmer, and especially if you are trying to get active, it’s good to ask yourself if you are drinking enough water? Most of us don’t, and as we get older we get worse. Those of us living with dementia, diabetes and kidney conditions are most at risk of dehydration. As a general rule we should all be drinking six to eight glasses of fluid each day so it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve always got a glass of water in front of you. If you do find drinking that much tricky then squash, fruit teas and even soup are all good ways to keep hydrated. The experts say the key is to starting drinking water when we get up in the morning and continue regularly throughout the day. Cheers!

If you want to speak to a friendly voice please always pick up the phone to us, we’d love to hear from you. In the meantime enjoy these lovely longer evenings and, of course, the odd hot cross bun!
