It’s such an obvious thing – eating well. But anyone who is older or living with a health condition knows that it’s hard to find the energy levels every day to make a nutritious meal.
Getting to the shops
Even before you embark on cooking you need to shop for the ingredients. It can be a really nice trip out to shop for ingredients and if you need support to do that the Home & Company team can help. Our helpers come with their cars and local journeys are included in our hourly rate. Looking at food in the supermarket is a great way of remembering what it is you like and stimulating the taste buds! If you aren’t leaving your home often to shop it’s easy to get into a rut and put the same old things on the shopping list. But we are also happy to be sent to the shops with a list if that’s what you want. Our team are great cooks and can help you come up with ideas for nutritious and tasty meals.
Online shopping
Online shopping is also a great option if you don’t feel able to manage a trip out. If you’re struggling with the technology to do an online order then the Home & Company team can help. Sainsbury’s offer a telephone ordering service for people who cannot travel to the shops or manage online orders. It’s worth remembering that there is a minimum order, generally of approximately £45. If that is more than you want to purchase you can make use of the range of delivery companies which can be accessed via your mobile phone, such as Deliveroo. They will pick up groceries from your selected supermarket and whizz them round to your door usually within an hour.
Guidelines on eating well
The current NHS guidelines on eating well advice us to eat “at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables a day”. They should make up just over a third of the foot we eat each day. This can include fresh, frozen, tinned, dried or juiced.
Cooking fresh food
If you’re a keen cook at heart and would like some help with cooking we’d love to support you. We’re great fans of simple freshly cooked food. The Home & Company office is very enthusiastic about the advancing soup season. Is there anything better than a steaming bowl of fresh vegetable soup?! Our team are confident cooks and can easily rustle up a batch of soup. Or how about a chicken casserole or a cottage pie that can last two or three days, and can be portioned up and put in the freezer.
Drinking well
Remember that we also need to drink 6-8 glasses of water each day too.
Meal delivery
If you just aren’t interested in cooking food in your home there will be several organisations in your area that deliver meals. Cook is a national company that delivers high quality meals for your freezer and which need to be cooked or warmed up at home. Other companies can deliver meals that are plated up and ready to be microwaved. And some companies can deliver hot meals so that you don’t need to do anything apart from eat! They usually have a large menu that you can choose from in advance.
Whatever you choose, make sure you are eating well and eating and drinking enough. Eating enough and eating healthily really improves energy levels and general feelings of wellbeing. Do give us a ring if you would like to chat through the options.
