Are you taking medication? We’ve spoken to a number of people over the last few weeks who are concerned about the medicines they’re taking. Older people are particularly vulnerable to polypharmacy – that’s defined as being prescribed four or more medications, with one in three hospital admissions in the over 75s a result of an adverse drug reaction. Did you know that community pharmacies offer a free annual Medicine Usage Review for all patients who are prescribed at least three medicines and have attended the pharmacy for three months? The purpose of the review is to discuss the medicine, possible side effects, medicine interactions and healthy lifestyle advice. Pharmacists can’t change or discontinue any of the medicines, but can contact the GP with the patient’s permission to discuss any issues they may have. Some pharmacies may be willing to offer a home visit. Do contact your pharmacist if you feel this would be helpful to you.

You might also be interested to know that NHS England are running a national consultation regarding the prescribing of over the counter medication for minor illnesses. In the year prior to June 2017, the NHS spent approximately £569 million on prescriptions for medicines which can be purchased over the counter from a pharmacy and other outlets such as supermarkets.  NHS England asked people what they think about spending less on medicines for some illnesses by supporting people to treat themselves. In response to feedback a list of 33 illnesses that can be treated using over the counter medicines has been made, and NHS England are asking further questions about views on the prescription of medicines for these health issues. NHS England are keen to hear your views. If you would like to complete online consultation please click onto the following link   . The survey ends on 14 March 2018.
