We all take our feet for granted. Our feet support us all day long, and yet they often get neglected. We know, however, that healthy feet are essential for our overall well-being. And keeping our feet healthy also helps to decrease the risk of falls.

Top 10 tips for looking after your feet

1. Daily Hygiene is Key:

Wash your feet daily with warm (not hot) water and mild soap. Pay special attention to the spaces between your toes, where moisture can build and lead to infections. Dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal growth.

2. Moisturise Regularly:

Prevent dry, cracked skin with a fragrance-free lotion or cream. Apply it after washing and drying your feet, but avoid putting it between the toes.

3. Choose Carefully When Buying New Footwear:

Invest in comfortable, well-fitting shoes with good arch support and a wide toe box. Avoid tight-fitting shoes or going barefoot for extended periods. A great additional tip is to shop for new shoes in the afternoon because our feet swell up as the day goes on.

4. Inspect Your Feet Daily:

Take a few minutes each day to check your feet for any cuts, blisters, swelling, redness, or changes in skin colour. Early detection can prevent problems from worsening.

5. Don’t Forget Your Toenails:

Trim your toenails straight across with clippers and avoid cutting them too short. This helps prevent ingrown toenails. If you’re struggling to cut your own toenails our Home & Company mobile foot care team can schedule appointments to see you in your own home.

6. Keep Your Blood Sugar in Check:

If you have diabetes, it’s crucial to manage your blood sugar levels to prevent nerve damage and circulation problems that can affect your feet.

7. Tackle Athlete’s Foot Head-On:

If you suspect athlete’s foot, a fungal infection causing itching and burning, seek treatment from a foot care practitioner or GP.

8. Don’t Ignore Foot Pain:

Pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. Don’t ignore persistent foot pain. A podiatrist can diagnose the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

9. Schedule Regular Foot care Appointments:

Regular check-ups with a foot care practitioner, even if you’re not experiencing any problems, are vital for maintaining healthy feet. They can identify potential issues early on and provide preventative care. Our Home & Company mobile foot care team can schedule appointments to see you in your own home.

10. Give Your Feet Some TLC:

Treat your feet to a relaxing foot soak with Epsom salts or a gentle foot massage. It’s a great way to unwind and improve circulation. Our Home & Company mobile wellbeing team can arrange to give you a foot massage in the comfort of your own home.

If you are cutting your own toe nails do look out for ingrown toenails and be sure to see your GP if:

  • your toe looks red (this may be less noticeable on brown or black skin) and swollen
  • your toe feels hot
  • you notice blood or pus (a thick yellowish liquid)

As we age it’s really important to keep moving, for lots of health reasons, including for your circulation, which is very beneficial to foot health. If you would like further information about looking after your feet check the NHS advice.
