Here at Home & Company we’re fans of any aids that help people to stay living independently at home. Over the past twenty years there have been a number of great low-tech solutions introduced to the market. Aids can provide much needed support and reassurance. Many of our clients already wear a simple alarm pendant that you can press if you need help, or are just feeling worried and need reassurance. The control centres are staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Alarm pendants and more

In addition to wearing a pendant, most remote alarm services can offer; smoke detectors; automatic light sensors so that your lamp comes on when you get out of bed; bed and chair sensors; and also door and mat sensors. They can also install a keysafe box so that helpers and carers can access your key and let themselves in if needed.

Of course we don’t want technology to replace human contact, we still need plenty of that! But sensor and alarm technology can give you and your family peace of mind and just make day to day life a little easier.

Slightly more advanced systems can monitor normal appliance usage. By monitoring kettles boiling or opening the fridge door it can reassure carers and family that all is well without having to bother the person directly. However current research suggests that those monitoring systems aren’t effective enough just yet.

Japanese toilets

Japanese toilets aren’t mainstream, but are becoming more common in the UK. They offer significant benefits for people with restricted mobility. The lid opens and closes automatically, the flush is automated too. The spray function washes and dries you so no need for paper (especially helpful if you have sores or piles), and no need to bend and twist. They are of course more expensive than traditional loos, but we think they are a great idea.

Aids don’t have to be technological at all. Simple things such as reachers to pick up items dropped on the floor, or long shoe horns to ease on footwear can all help with remaining independent. Grab bars can make getting in and out of your home so much easier. Age UK provide great information on what’s available from mobility showrooms. More locally we are lucky to have a great Clearwell show rooms in Woodingdean and Worthing.

One step at a time though. If you are thinking about what might be helpful for you now in the near future perhaps start by contacting Carelink in Brighton.
