We don’t like to dwell on issues of safety, but occasionally it’s worth a having a few quick reminders about simple ways to stay safe at this time of year.
Hot water bottles
A recent article earlier this month from the BBC has urged us to think carefully about old hot water bottles. One hospital in East Grinstead has seen a 61% rise in hot water bottle burns. Consultant Plastic Surgeon Paul Drake said “Hot water bottles need to be checked for safety. They’re often quite old. They can leak, they can burst.” He is urging everyone to replace their hot water bottles every two years. Further advice is never fill hot water bottles with boiling water and always check the rubber flower symbol on the neck, which shows when the hot water bottle was made. We at the Home & Company office love to use a hot water bottle on a chilly day so it’s a good reminder for us too.
Electric blankets
Now is a great time of year to get your electric blanket tested. East Sussex Fire and Rescue offer a free safety check. Do contact them to find out where your nearest testing venue is by phoning 0303 999 1000. And if it’s a while since you’ve had smoke alarms and appliances checked then arrange a home visit too. It’s a great service!
Driving in the dark
The clocks have gone back and it always feels a shock to be plunged into those dark night doesn’t it? Are you confident about driving in the dark? If you’re not sure your eyes are up to it then always best to err on the side of caution. And if you haven’t had an eye test recently then maybe it’s a good time to book that in. The DVLA states that it’s illegal to drive if you can’t read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres.
Scams
It won’t be long until we start Christmas shopping. At this time of year we need to be extra vigilant about scams. Friends against Scams is a national initiative which aims to protect all of us from becoming victims. If you have access to a tablet or computer they offer online training to help you find out more about scams and how you can protect yourself and others from becoming a victim. Their website also offers a host of information about different types of scams. Perhaps you aren’t online but are worried and need some advice? You can phone your local Citizens Advice Bureau.
If we can help with anything that’s concerning you always give us a ring. If we can’t help you directly we will be able to signpost you to an organisation who can.
In the meantime enjoy those lovely autumn colours!
