We often hear on the news about Britain’s obesity crisis but many, particularly older, people are not eating enough. Research shows that 1 in 10 people aged over 65 are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. Cooking for one can feel a real drag and isn’t particularly economical. If you’re feeling like cooking has become too much maybe it’s time to think about having some meals delivered?  Or if you would prefer home cooked food it might be time to think about having some help in the kitchen from someone like Home & Company. This February weather can make Spring feel a long way off, but on the bright side is there anything better than a steaming bowl of soup on a wet day? And a casserole for those darker evenings? We have lots of great cooks on the team if you would like some help with home cooking, either regularly or ad hoc, and great for stocking up the freezer.

Brighton has it’s own version of the successful Casserole Club which has taken off internationally. It connects people who like to cook and are happy to share an extra portion of a delicous home-cooked meal with older neighbours living close by who could really do with a meal and a friendly chat. We know how important nutrition is but so is hydration. Do you drink enough water? Most of us don’t, and as we get older we get worse. Somehow when it’s cold outside the prompt to reach for a glass of water seems even further from our mind. Those of us living with dementia, diabetes and kidney conditions are most at risk of dehydration but as a general rule we should all be drinking six to eight glasses of fluid each day so it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve always got a glass of water in front of you. If you do find drinking that much tricky then squash, fruit teas and even soup are all good ways to keep hydrated. The experts say the key is to starting drinking water when we get up in the morning and continue regularly throughout the day. Cheers!
