Did you know that the Digital Telephone Switch Over will take place by December 2025? This means the current analogue telephone lines will cease to exist in favour of digital internet telephone lines. Yes the old copper network will be switched off for good at the end of next year. Many other countries have already made the move. We joined an information session which helped us to understand what will happen. If your landline cable is connected to your broadband router then you have already migrated and no action is needed. If your landline cable is connected via the wall and you don’t have access to the internet then you will need to switch over.
All the service providers (BT, Virgin, Sky, TalkTalk etc) are committed to supporting people whose only means of communication is via their landline. They will also provide extra support if you are reliant on your landline for telecare such as pendants etc. If you need help with the switch over please alert your service provider now. They will then have you listed for extra support with the necessary equipment and installation when the time comes.
When you switch over you will keep the same number and there is no additional cost. It’s just that the old copper cables are becoming obsolete nationally and need to be upgraded. The telephone providers say that the digital lines offer better scam protection and also energy efficiency so hopefully there are lots of benefits to be had. Do contact your service provider for any further information. And if you want to read more about the detail of the switch over Which offers a great round up.
