Have you considered whether your eyesight is still good enough to drive? The RAC Foundation, a motoring research charity, has recently urged the Government to introduce “compulsory eye tests for all drivers” during licence renewals. A report from the DVLA highlighted that one in 25 driving licence holders in the UK is aged 80 or above. And a survey by YouGov revealed that 65% of British adults would support drivers aged 70 or above having to retake a practical test every three years to keep their licence. Currently over 70s only need to apply every three years to renew their photocard license, with no testing involved.
Between 2016 and 2021 older drivers involved in serious crashes contributed to 30% of incidents. Making the decision to hang up the keys is a really difficult one. We know it can make people feel like they have lost their independence. But perhaps some additional checks would help provide the reassurance to continue driving, or nudge people to give up. It will be interesting to see what happens next. Watch this space!
