You probably know by now how passionate we are about good food as we do tend to talk about food rather a lot! But we’re equally passionate about fresh air and keeping moving. A recent report by the Centre for Ageing Better has highlighted how important it is, where possible, to make physical activity part of the fabric of our everyday lives. Their latest research shows that levels of physical activity and active travel (eg walking to the shops) are low especially among older age groups. Of course we need to be physcially able to exersize and that’s not easy for everyone. But other factors also play their part including: pyschological capabilities such as confidence; opportunity – for example it might be harder for those living in rural communities to access shops by walking; having access to well-maintained footpaths; having enough time (those who are retired have more time and flexibility); and key to being physically active is having the motivation. Interestingly, in spite of increased awareness, environmental benefits of active travel was not a strong motivator in older adults. The NHS has useful guidelines for how much we should exercise in our later years. They advise adults aged 65 and over should:

aim to be physically active every day. Any activity is better than none. The more you do the better, even if it’s just light activity
do activities that improve strength, balance and flexibility on at least 2 days a week
do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity if you are already active, or a combination of both
reduce time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity

If you’ve fallen or are worried about falling, doing exercises to improve your strength, balance and flexibility will help make you stronger and feel more confident on your feet. Speak to your GP if you have any concerns about exercising.

At Home & Company we are supporting many people to keep active by accompanying them on walks or to go shopping. If you feel having someone with you would help with staying active do give us a ring.
