There are several pieces of research which point to the fact that gardening is good for us and makes us happy. The reasons behind it seem to be quite diverse – the act of gardening itself appears to reduce stress levels, the physical exercise is beneficial, and being amongst greenery seems to improve mood.

That’s aside from the tremendous feeling of achievement that can be found in producing a beautiful border, or a ripe tomato Why Gardening is Good for Your Health. You don’t need acres of land to cultivate your own little corner of paradise either. A small patio with pots, or window boxes and baskets all count. And at this time of year there are plenty of jobs to be done! The Royal Horticultural Society RHS has a handy list of top 10 tips for your garden this June:

Top 10 tips

  1. Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside, choosing shrubs and evergreens for long-lasting display
  2. Be water-wise, and don’t water during the heat of the day as much of the water is lost in evaporation from surface of the soil
  3. Pinch out sideshoots on tomatoes
  4. Harvest salad plants and early potatoes
  5. Hoe your borders to keep down weeds
  6. Mow your lawn once a week, but do try to leave some areas uncut to promote insect life
  7. Plant out your summer beds
  8. Use stakes on tall or floppy plants
  9. Prune your spring-flowering shrubs
  10. Shade greenhouses to keep them cool

Gardening can be fairly vigorous work though, and you may be feeling like you could do with some help. Home & Company can help in a number of ways; our lovely team come with their car and if you need help getting to the garden centre to choose your seeds and plants, and transport heavy items, such as compost, back home then we would love to help.

We also have a team of professional gardeners who can help with planning, planting and general garden maintenance. They are happy to come and help ad hoc, or more regularly, whichever works best for you.
