There are so many important jobs which feel like they need to be put on hold due to the pandemic, things like organising your Will. If you don’t make a will though it means that your estate may not go to the people and causes that you want and care about. In particular it’s worth noting that if you and your partner aren’t married or in a civil partnership, your partner won’t have a right to inherit if you don’t have a will, and if you marry, remarry or enter a civil partnership this cancels a previously existing will. We were interested to hear recently from our friends at Renaissance Legal that the Government has made changes in recognition of Covid-19 to allow Wills to be witnessed remotely (ie over Zoom, FaceTime or Skype) so that there is no need to attend the office of the law firm how may be organising your Will. This change won’t be permanent but it has been agreed until January 2022.

Age UK advise that even if you do have a will in place it’s a good idea to review it every five years to make sure that any substantial changes in your life can be reflected with an amendment known as a codicil. While we’re all rather home-based and don’t have many other distractions now is a great opportunity to get your estate in order.
