Are you tempted by the January sales? In today’s digital world we have everything at our fingertips, and the ability to shop online from the comfort of our home is both fast and convenient which is great, especially if we’re finding it hard to get out and about, or don’t want to brave the January temperatures. However,  we need to remain more vigilant than ever as scammers find increasingly inventive ways to trick us.  Research shows that online shopping scams cost people in the UK £58 million per year – a startling number that’s only set to rise.

It’s essential to take extra care when shopping online during the January sales. Scammers are using the sale season as an opportunity to trick people with the promise of great bargains. In particular, older people can be more vulnerable to scams, especially if they are less confident in using technology.

However, there are some simple steps that you can take to ensure you’re not caught out by online fraudsters. Sainsbury’s Bank has created a useful 10 step guide to safer online shopping, with tips on how you can secure your devices and how to avoid suspicious websites. It also provides information on reporting scams and getting your money back in the unfortunate event something does happen.

If you have been a victim of fraud, report it to Action Fraudonline or by calling 0300 123 2040.
